A RESPONSIBLE APPROACH TO EVENT MANAGEMENT

ISO is the International Organisation for Standardisation. ISO 20121 is the globally recognised standard for best practice event sustainability management and was introduced in at the London Olympics in 2012. ISO 20121 is a practical tool for managing events so that they contribute to the economic, environmental and social dimensions required to achieve event sustainability.

Offering a common international language for event management, ISO 20121 provides a framework for global tendering and comparison of offers, encouraging international trade in the sector. Events based in different geographical locations around the world will experience different sustainability issues, but they all can implement the ISO 20121 framework.

TonneZero is uniquely placed to implement the ISO 20121 standard, to conduct pre-certification internal audits and to co-ordinate and project manage the certification process by external certification bodies.

Once your ISO 20121 system is implemented you would seek globally recognised certification to the standard. Independent verification of conformity to the standard requirements can be achieved by employing an external certification body., We have partnered with the British Standards Institute, a company formed in 1901 by Sir John Wolfe-Barry as the world’s first National Standards Body. BSI continue to inspire international standardization. BSI produced the world’s first Events Sustainability Management Standard, BS 8901, now ISO 20121 which was used in 2012 by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) and by the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games for truly sustainable events.

SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGIES

TonneZero develops high-level sustainability plans that form part of the framework for the environmental aspects of your event. This framework will outline the basic approach to ensuring sustainability. It will consider issues such as climate change, carbon footprints, energy use, resource management, waste management, and operational efficiencies aimed at cost reduction. The strategy will also highlight what monitoring and measurement will be required during the event. In cases where the event will be certified to ISO 20121 this would form part of the system documentation.

WASTE MANAGEMENT INITIATIVES

TonneZero develops integrated waste management plans to include a variety of specific waste management initiatives that can be incorporated into your event. In many cases preparation of an IWMP is necessary to comply with the requirements of local authority legislation. All relevant SEMA’s (Secondary Environmental Management Acts), regulations, draft legislation and standards that concern waste – in particular and your event in general – will be taken into account.

Site specific IWMPs can also be developed for each venue or site. These will integrate with the overarching IWMP but will include area and jurisdiction specific requirements and initiatives.

WATER AND NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES

Integrated natural resource management (INRM) is a process of managing natural resources in a systematic way, which includes multiple aspects of natural resource use (biophysical, socio-political, and economic) to meet set goals. These strategies will provide pathways to achieve identified resource use goals. They will also identify instruments for increasing social and financial accountability of water management and water services. These strategies will provide insight in the legal, political and institutional framework affecting water governance in your context. Efficiencies identified will reduce water use and result in concomitant cost reduction.

GREEN SUPPLY CHAIN

The Procurement Policy and Purchasing Procedure will be updated to include environmental aspects. This will ensure that the procurement of service providers for your event will take into account environmental aspects as a selection criterion.

AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

We can assist in developing awareness campaigns to showcase new environmental innovation and promote environmental awareness. We will assist in developing competitions and provide input where required.

SUSTAINABILITY REPORTING (POST EVENT)

A sustainability report that summarises the environmental impacts of your event will be developed post-event. It will highlight all initiatives that were successfully completed and assess performance against targets and frameworks established pre-event. This will also establish a platform for benchmarking for future events.

FEASIBILITY STUDIES FOR A CARBON NEUTRAL EVENT

We can compile a feasibility study to estimate the carbon footprint of your event, identify possible measures to reduce carbon emissions, and recommend what type of institutional regime for carbon offsets is required to achieve a “carbon neutral” event.

The study can cover the following:
● carbon footprint methodology;
● summary of footprint;
● benchmarking previous events;
● institutional issues for a carbon neutral event;
● objectives of the carbon offset process;
● growth of the voluntary carbon market;
● election of offset projects;
● third party verification of projects;
● conclusions and recommendations.

PRE-EVENT CARBON MANAGEMENT PLAN

A feasibility study will be conducted that will inform a more definitive carbon management plan, inclusive of specific actions and targets. These include:

● policies, strategies and targets to achieve absolute reductions;
● emissions baseline & projections;
● recent initiatives for reducing carbon emissions;
● responsibility for carbon management;
● carbon management framework;
● goals and actions;
● carbon reduction targets.

CARBON FOOTPRINT OF THE EVENT

The carbon footprint of your event can be measured post event. The report will include an introduction, explain the methodology used to calculate the carbon footprint and indicate the emission factors used. The report will also include the scope and boundaries of the assessment, and present the results.

ENERGY MANAGEMENT PLAN

An Energy Management Plan (EMP) in accordance with SANS 50001 can be compiled. This will set out the manner in which the energy performance of the data provider will be managed. “SANS 50001” means the South African National Standard for Energy Management Systems. The report will include areas of energy efficiency savings potential and energy performance indicators for monitoring and measuring energy performance.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY STRATEGIES, MONITORING AND AUDITING

TonneZero offers a range of energy services to help you improve energy efficiency by identifying where significant energy savings can be made in your event. Energy efficiency equates to cost reduction. Services include:

● a roadmap of energy-efficiency actions
● energy monitoring and targeting
● energy analysis and reporting
● energy auditing
● feasibility studies on energy-related interventions
● benchmarking against other events

LEGAL & SYSTEM COMPLIANCE AUDITING

The audit objective will be to determine the extent of an event’s legal and/or system compliance. Legal compliance will be measured against event and venue specific applicable environmental legislation at national, provincial and local authority level. The audits will also assess compliance with the relevant initiatives that will be implemented such as the IWMPs.
